In the latest development regarding voice actress Hellena Taylor’s salary dispute with PlatinumGames, the former Bayonet The star has now responded to reports challenging her account of negotiations with a Twitter feedsaying she feels “a need to defend myself and my reputation in the industry”.
First, a little background. As marketing for the upcoming Bayonetta 3 intensified, PlatinumGames said Hellena Taylor could not reprise the lead role due to “overlapping circumstances”. Taylor then posted a series of videos on Twitter calling the compensation offer she received — a final lump sum offer of $4,000, she says — “an insult” and asking fans to boycott the game.
Following this, sources including Bloomberg and VGC reported that Taylor was offered a total of $15,000, spread over “at least five” studio sessions. It was also claimed that “Taylor requested a six-figure sum plus residuals on the game”. After some online abuse targeting Jennifer Hale — the New Bayonetta – PlatinumGames also weighed in to voice their support for the actor and ask that people please refrain from disrespecting Hale or any other contributors to the series.
Due to discrepancies between Hellena Taylor’s statement and subsequent reports, and a subsequent backlash with some questioning the accuracy of her initial claims, Taylor has now responded via a new Twitter thread to iron out any miscommunications. potential after being called a “liar and a gold digger”.
Although Taylor didn’t mention any monetary value other than the final offer of $4,000 in her initial video statement – in fact, in her first video she said: “The final offer to do the whole game, as a lump sum buyout, was 4000 USD” – she mentioned in her third video that she received a pre-offer from PlatinumGames after auditioning for the role. It was apparently after this that she decided to contact Hideki Kamiya, who then offered the additional $5,000 (Taylor’s “50000” is presumably a typo) mentioned in the statement above.
Here’s a reminder of exactly what she said in the third video:
“I had to audition again, because sometimes voices change over time, so I auditioned for the role and obviously passed with flying colors. They then sent me an insulting offer, so I thought ‘you know what, I will write to Hideki Kamiya'”.
In his latest thread, Taylor also retaliated against claims that she demanded six-figure sums for the role, saying she never wanted “a fair and decent salary”. Her too revealed she was paid £3,000 for her work on the first game and says her involvement in the Bayonetta community helped sustain interest in the game when PlatinumGames itself remained silent:
“There were no ‘thorough negotiations’. I was also told ridiculous fictions like I asked for $250,000, I’m a team player, I was just asking for a fair salary and decent on par with the value I bring to this game.
I was paid an outrageously low £3,000 in total for the first game. A little more for the second. I wanted to make her hear. I’ve been sparking interest in this game since I started on Twitter in 2011.
I couldn’t talk about the game because of the NDAs, but I happily responded to fan letters, emails, signed posters, recorded voicemails for weddings and birthdays. I maintained interest in the game during Platinum’s long periods of radio silence.”
To finish, Taylor writes about her discomfort to ask fans for money in exchange for signings, choosing instead to donate 100% of signing fees to charity. She again asked fans to do the same instead of buying Bayonetta 3:
“The one time I attended a conference about the game, I felt weird asking the fans for money for a signing because they had already paid for the game and I was grateful that they liked my work and character, so I donated 100% signing fee to charity.
I will post all 14 charities, so you can donate to charity, instead of buying this game from corrupt and greedy people.) There are people trying to throw shade and to discredit what I say. The industry is powerful, they also have powerful journalists.
They are trying to save their property. Do not fall into the trap !”
Should any further updates arise from this dispute between Taylor and PlatinumGames, we’ll be sure to let you know!
