Interview Transcript

Gematsu: What’s new in the PlayStation, Xbox and PC versions of More Heroes III?

Goichi Suda, producer and director: “First of all there is the fact that they are different platforms, so I think you will be able to play with improved graphics and a stable frame rate of 60 frames per second.

“Also, the biggest new thing is the addition of Japanese voices. We have an amazing Japanese voice actor in this game. A lot of people watch Japanese anime, so I think you’ll probably hear some familiar voices in this episode. Some fans said it looked like a Gintama-style range, but many Gintama The family actually participated in the game, so that’s one of the main cool things I’d like everyone to find out.

“After playing in English, you can try to play next with the Japanese voices… A second part in Japanese. I think that would be a great way to enjoy the game.”

With More Heroes III coming to PlayStation and Xbox, is there any chance we can see More heroes 1 and 2 come on these platforms?

South :More heroes 1 and 2 are currently only playable on Steam and Switch [12,301 articles]” href=”https://www.gematsu.com/platforms/nintendo/switch”>Switch, and I think it would be better to make them available to play on a wider variety of platforms, so this is something i would love to collaborate with Marvelous [1,225 articles]” href=”https://www.gematsu.com/companies/marvelous”>Wonderful and it will eventually happen. I can’t promise anything at this time, but that’s where we are at the moment.”

More Heroes III arrived 11 years after the last numbered entry. What was it like finally creating the sequel that fans have been asking for for years?

South : “Yes, 11 years is a long time; as longer than the usual lifespan of a platform itself. The game we had developed on Wii [240 articles]” href=”https://www.gematsu.com/platforms/nintendo/wii”>Wii ended up skipping generations and landing on the Switch, and it was, hm, how shall I put it… It really felt like we were able to return to the world of more heroes quite smoothly. But even within our studio, we first had to make sure people knew More heroes 1 and 2. What kind of games are they and how much the fans loved them… I feel like that was our real starting point.

“So obviously we had our own image of that kind of III we wanted to create, but there is also the III that fans wanted to see; the III they imagined. So in development we tried to make sure that those visions of III overlap as much as possible.

Was there anything you wanted to do in More Heroes IIIbut could not due to budgetary or technical constraints?

South : “Well, I’d be lying if I said there wasn’t. It’s difficult. Of course, there were a lot of things we wanted to do, and I’ve talked about that in many interviews, but we originally envisioned having 100 bosses and having more playable characters besides Travis; those are some of the ideas we considered. Moreover, it was going to take place not only in Santa Destroy, but also in a place called Utopiland. We wanted to create an entire freely traversable map. I had really hoped to accomplish all of these things, but due to factors such as game volume, scheduling, budget, etc., we ended up having to cut a lot of things.

“But we really wanted to focus on the Travis story, you know? So by having other playable characters as well, I felt like it would kind of dilute Travis’ final battle. Considering what we have now is due to cutting it all down, I think ultimately it turned out to be a good decision.

Are you happy with how it went? Is there anything you would like to change?

South : “Yes, I’m happy with the game, but since its release, a lot of fans of 1 and 2 mentioned… (laughs)…

“So in 1 and 2, you were able to trade the Beam Katana, right? You could upgrade it, and you could get new weapons, and selectable weapons were one of more heroes‘ main Features. But we got rid of it for IIIand focused on the Blood Berry instead.

“To be honest… I wish we had added more weapons. I wanted to have three types of weapons, and that’s honestly one of my regrets. So in the future, if we do a remake or a remaster or something, like maybe in 10 years or so, I want to be sure to put things like that in the game, if that happens. But again, I can’t promise anything at this time.

You said More Heroes III would be the end of the line for Travis and more heroes. But is this really the end? Is there certainly not more heroes come?

South : “I mean Hideo Kojima [137 articles]” href=”https://www.gematsu.com/people/hideo-kojima”>Hideo Kojima said he was done with it Meta [21 articles]” href=”https://www.gematsu.com/platforms/meta”>Metal Gear Solid like twice, but we still have more (wink).

“As for Travis’ last game and final battle, I think it’s Travis retirement or an honorable discharge.

“But, yeah… As with all professional wrestlers, often they retire and then come back. For example, some of my favorites, like Terry Funk or Atsushi Onita, who is legendary in Japan for his deathmatches. They have retired so many times. Each time they retire, they make a comeback. I saw Terry Funk retire three times. And each time, he returns to the ring.

“So when it comes to Travis, well…He loves pro wrestling. [2 articles]” href=”https://www.gematsu.com/genres/wrestling”>wrestling, and his “retirement” might just be a little break. I don’t know. I’d rather give him the choice, and see what he thinks about it.

If you could create a derivative game in the more heroes series in any genre, what would it be?

South : “Hm… for any gender?” Right now it would be with FU, the character that really exploded in III. He’s become such an escape character, and I feel like we were able to craft the perfect opponent for Travis’ end enemy, but FU… is he really, really dead in the end? Is he still alive? Even I don’t know.

“If FU was still alive… I think his story would still have a long way to go, so I’d like to do FU’s story. FU goes to hell, and comes back from hell again… I wonder if we could make a hack ‘n’ slash game out of this story? That’s probably what it would be.

Travis Touchdown vs. Mondo Zappa vs. Juliet Starling vs. Garcia Hotspur. Who wins?

South : “Wow, that’s hard. I don’t think anyone has ever asked me that.

“Hmm, who is the strongest? You know, I would really like to see this fight. You know, in 2028… Grasshopper will be celebrating its 30th anniversary. It would be cool to make a Grasshopper All-Stars, Battle Royale game [18 articles]” href=”https://www.gematsu.com/genres/battle-royale”>battle royale style, where all the characters would go against each other. We are currently discussing this at Grasshopper. If it ends happens, then we will know maybe then the answer. Who is the strongest…?”

Would you please share one last message for the fans before logging off?

South : “To all who have played more heroesthank you for playing and buying the game.

“The character of Travis Touchdown has been loved, watched and supported by gamers, and has come all the way to III. After that… a lot of people want another sequel, and we just discussed a possible spin-off, but I wish I had the world of more heroes continue; to see it connect to something. We’ve received many similar comments, but… Travis really does what he wants, and even I have no idea what he’s going to do next. But someday, if Travis says he wants to go crazy again, fight again, then I’ll talk with Marvelous and maybe 10 years from now… maybe even further… It could end up being a long wait, or Travis could end up staying retired. He can just live the rest of his life in peace, in paradise.

“But still, I want to thank everyone for their support. more heroes! We still have no idea what will happen to Travis Touchdown, but I hope you will continue to support us! Thanks a lot!”
