Stunning time-lapse video reveals a decade in the life of the universe

Black holes engulfing gas, baby stars emerging in thick shrouds of dust and old stars exploding in powerful supernovae: these are just some of the types of events observed in a decade by the explorer of NASA’s NEOWISE asteroids and comets released in stunning new video.

Nasa‘s NEOWISE, or Near-Earth Object Wide Field Infrared Survey Explorer, orbits about 300 miles (500 kilometers) above Earthconstantly turned towards the sky and looking into the universe. Every six months, the telescope produces a portrait of the entire cosmos visible through its infrared detectors. By arranging 18 of these portraits in a sequence, astronomers have created a movie depicting a decade in the life of stars, galaxies and other objects within range of the telescope.
